The Vermont Winter Reading Challenge is open now through the end of February! The new year is a time for reflection and reinvigoration. What better way to do that than to cozy up with inspiring books this winter? The challenge is open to readers of all ages. Participants can read books of their choosing, log minutes, and earn digital badges. Register on the Vermont Department of Libraries’ Beanstack platform by clicking here. Please select Latham Library as your library of choice when registering. Five participants will be selected to win a prize at the end of the challenge!
The Latham Seed Saving Library was launched in the fall of 2020, so this is our first growing season! That means that we don’t yet have a large selection of seeds to share. Over the coming years, with help from you and others, we will be able to build our library’s stock and diversity. If you are successful in your gardening and seed saving and can return seeds to the library to pass on to future gardeners, you will be helping us to fulfill our goal of building a growing, thriving community seed library. This month the New Yorker Articles group will discuss the work of James Baldwin (1924 – 1987), an American writer, poet, social critic, and activist. We will focus on his work for the civil rights movement. Using an essay he wrote in 1962 for the New Yorker “Letter From a Region of My Mind,” the movie, “I Am Not Your Negro,” and a podcast from the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation, “A Baldwin Revival: In Good Times and Bad,” we will explore how his work remains relevant and alive today. Please join us and take part in a conversation that motivates and inspires us to improve the human condition both individually and collectively.

Our book for March is “Rez Life.” Written by David Treuer, a member of the Ojibwe tribe from Minnesota’s Leech Lake Reservation, the book offers an insider’s view of the history of reservations and contemporary Native American life as it debunks common misconceptions and explores political tensions, casinos, crime, cultural preservation and other topics.
Our companion film is “Winter in the Blood”, a time-bending odyssey that depicts a Native American wrestling with regret, childhood wounds and the challenges of ethnicity in a small-town community in Montana. Based on the book by James Welch, it was an official selection at the 2013 Los Angeles, Austin and American Indian film festivals. Our book for April is The Sellout, a slashing satire and comedic rampage that eviscerates nearly every social taboo and politically correct sacred cow of contemporary American society, while offering a seriously honest reflection on race and identity in America. Written by Paul Beatty, the book earned the 2016 Man Booker Prize – the first for an American author – as well as the National Book Critics Circle Award.
Our companion film is People Like Us: Social Class in America. It pricks yet another taboo – the notion that America is a classless society.
